CURRICULUM

Expertise 1 – Hyleg, Alcocoden, Almuten

The hyleg, alcocoden and almuten are known to us through the Arab and Hellenistic astrologers.

Hyleg is who gives life. They call him the Giver of Life. The Alcocoden is the Giver of the Years, and the Almuten is the most powerful planet in the horoscope, the one with the most possessions and dignities.

The hyleg, alcocoden and almuten were an essential part of the horoscope. Hyleg determines the health and vitality of man, the alcocoden gives the years one has to life, and the almuten determines the character and the destiny of man.

Hyleg

The hyleg is extremely important. It is the divine spark of life that, at birth, with the first inhalation, the spirit or divine particle enters the human body, or, as some authors call it, a particle of light enters the human body called “family atom”. This atom keeps all the information from previous incarnations. According to Hermes, this is the light that comes from the cosmos.

Hyleg comes from the Arabic khaylage, which is also taken took from the Persians and means “who sets” or “holy”. The hyleg is the master of life. From him we judge the health of the native and his total vitality. For this he is the Master of Life and must necessarily be determined in the horoscope.

How to find the hyleg?

There are many authors with different theories about how to find the hyleg. According to Dorotheus and the Arabs * described by R. Kolev, the hyleg can be only the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant, the Sizygy, and the Lot of fortune. Other authors take also planets. The hyleg is to be determined according to the power of the above points in the horoscope.

We first quote Ptolemy and his Tetrabiblus because he is the best-known author of antiquity. According to him, the hyleg can only be in the strong astrological houses, that is, those that make an aspect to the ascendant, are above the horizon, and thereby contribute to the personality of the native.

In short, Ptolemy gives the following instructions for finding the hyleg.

The houses are:

10, 1, 11, 7, 9

  • For diurnal chart hyleg can only be:

Sun, Moon, ascendant

Ruler of: Sun, Moon, Sizygy **, ascendant.

  • For nocturnal chart:

Moon, Sun

Lord of the Moon, Sizygy- opposition between Sun and Moon, lot of fortune

Ascendant – provided that the Sizygy is a conjunction between the Sun and the Moon

Lot of fortune – provided that the Sizygy is an opposition between the Sun and the Moon.

The rulers of the Sun, the Sizygy (conjunction between luminaries), the ascendant, or the Moon, Syzygy (opposition between the luminaries), the lot of fortune, are the planets with the most dignities in minimum three places in the horoscope.

For example, to be ruler of the sect, night planet in a nocturnal nativity, day planet in a diurnal nativity, to be in the important houses according to Ptolemy, other dignities are rulership by house, exaltation, triplicity, term, decanate.

  1. We start looking for Sun or Moon in order the 10, 1, 11, 9. 7 houses. 10th house is considered the strongest because it is the highest, 7th is the weakest.
  1. We make a list of all the above-mentioned points and those who have the most dignities, according to Ptolemy- at least three, and are in one of the above-mentioned houses, we choose. We do not forget to judge the houses according to their power. We take a luminary or point in the most powerful house.

The rulerships are valued in the following order:

By house, exaltation, triplicity, term, decanate.

We will show you one more of the many theories of finding the hyleg, and it is Dorotheus’s *** theory.

Unlike Ptolemy, Dorotheus adds also the next houses as possible places to find the hyleg. According to his theory, hyleg can only be:

Sun or Moon, Ascendant, lot of fortune or Sizygy

Or

Sun or Moon, the lot of fortune, Syzygi, the ascendant.

The order is important here, order is the importance of the possible hylegs.

The following houses are potential places for the hyleg:

  1. For the Sun to be hyleg, it must be in a male sign and in a male quadrant, ie. in homes 11, 10, 4, 5.
  1. For the Moon to be a hyleg, the condition is to be in a female sign, in a female quadrant, and these are the houses 7, 8, 1, 2.

Dorotheus, like Ptolemy, first takes into account the Sun if the birth is diurnal and the Moon if it is a nocturnal birth.

There are many different ways of finding the hyleg presented by many different authors. I can recall 6 authors, that I know of, like Paul of Alexandria, Vetius Valens, Alcabicius, Porfiri. From my personal experience, the way Dorotheus is finding the hyleg works very well. Therefore, I chose to present you his way.

Alcocoden

According to the Arabs who used mainly ancient Persian astrology, the Giver of the Years was al kadkudha– the Master of the House or, alcocoden, as it was transformed into latin later.

The Alcocoden gives the years of life.

You cannot find the alcocoden without knowing which planet is the hyleg.

The alcocoden is the planet that rules the hyleg. It determines how long a person will live and that is why he is called the Giver of the Years. Alcocoden is also the Guardian Angel of the native*. From which planet is alcocoden or the guardian angel, we understand how the native will be taught. For example, if the alcocoden is Jupiter, the native will have a soft and attentive teacher, if it is Saturn, he will be a difficult, hard teacher, just like Saturn. The alcocoden according to Valens can be a fallen guardian angel and that’s when:

  • He is in a falling home.
  • Invisible
  • Does not make an aspect with the hyleg.
  • The rulers of the house and term of the luminaries are in mutual reception, ie. They have exchanged their terms.
  • If Mars is in the Jupiter term, and Jupiter is in the term of Mars (and they are rulers of the luminaries)

A fallen guardian angel means that man has no protection from the angelic world. Whether this is really true, it is difficult to say. When determining the years of life that alcocoden gives, it is important to determine whether the alcocoden is a fallen angel or not. This can affect the longevity of the native. This and the ways of determining the longevity of man will be described in another chapter.

How to find the alcocoden?

There are many different rules for finding the alcocoden we read about.

A simple and workable rule is that of Dorotheus, and it is the following

The planet that controls the hyleg by term, house, exaltation, triplicity or decanate, and aspects the hyleg, may be alcocoden. So, you can see, that we cannot have alcocoden without hyleg.

Almuten

Almuten or in some literature of the classic Hellenic astrology you may find it as almuten figuris, is the most powerful planet in the horoscope. The one who has the most dignities. It dominates the entire horoscope and gives the most accurate description of the character of the born. According to Porfirius, as translated from ancient Greek by Kolev, the almuten is the Lord and is different in terms of quality and qualities from the alcocoden. So prevalent in the horoscope is the almuten that the experienced astrologer can find it via the reverse order, just by analyzing the behavior, the aura, the expression, and the attitude of the person.

It is known that when we descend to Earth we accept the essence of the planets. The almuten will be the planet that prevails the most, the most essential for the native.

A man with almuten Mars will be Martian, typically very ambitious, aggressive at times, sometimes very purposeful.

The above shows that almuten must be the planet with the most dignities in one’s horoscope.

For easy calculation, we suggest using the table below, which estimates the different planetary rulerships in order of strength.

An example of calculating the hyleg, the alcocoden, and the almuten.

Calculating the hyleg

We will use the Dorotheus system because it is easy, understandable and working.

This horoscope is random. Birth is daily. In order to find the hyleg, due to the daily birth, we analyze the position of the Sun first.

The Sun is at 24 ° Libra. Libra is a male sign, they are in the 8th house, and he is in the night quadrant. So the Sun cannot qualify for a potential hyleg.

We continue with the Moon. She is in 16 ° Pisces in the 2nd house. Pisces are a night sign, and the 2nd house falls into the night quadrant. Therefore, the Moon is eligible to be hyleg.

Calculation of the alcocoden

The ruler of the Moon’s term is Jupiter, and Jupiter and the Moon are in a square aspect. Therefore, Jupiter is eligible to be alcocoden, because Jupiter has an aspect with the hyleg- the Moon in our case.

Calculation of the almuten

In the above calculations, the rulers of trigonocracy or triplicity are only those who are for the nocturnal chart, the night ruler, and for the diurnal-the day rulers. Co-rulers are not taken into account.

The table is given for easy-use, the yellow points on the top of the table are given to estimate the power of the domains of the planets. Find the place of the planet and give it an appreciation. Finally you sum up. The planet with the most points dominates the horoscope. It will be almuten.

Venus is the almutan with the most possessions in the horoscope

The hyleg, the alcocoden, and almutan are very important and it is advisable to start with them in the making of the horoscope. They are the A and B of the ancient astrology.
